Join us for a presentation of the best book of the year (Economist) - Red Famine: Stalin's War on Ukraine by Anne Applebaum.
Anne Applebaum is an American-Polish journalist and Pulitzer Prize–winning author. She is a columnist for The Washington Post, a Professor of Practice at the London School of Economics, and a contributor to The New York Review of Books. Her previous books include Iron Curtain, winner of the Cundill Prize and a finalist for the National Book Award; and Gulag, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction and a finalist for three other major prizes.
About the book:
In 1932-33, nearly 4 million Ukrainians died of starvation, having been deliberately deprived of food. It is considered to be one of the most devastating episodes in the history of the 20th century. Red Famine investigates how this happened, who was responsible, and what the consequences were. The book is based on archival material, as well as the work of Ukrainian scholars all over the world. It includes accounts of the famine by those who survived it. It shows how the Soviet state used propaganda to turn neighbours against each other in order to expunge supposedly 'anti-revolutionary' elements. It also tells stories of extraordinary individuals who did all they could to relieve the suffering.
Language of the event: English with translation into Ukrainian.
